Homemade Crumbl style pink sugar cookies with swirled pink buttercream frosting
Homemade Crumbl style cookies

Crumbl style cookies are large, soft, chewy sugar cookies topped with a swirl of pink almond and vanilla buttercream, inspired by the famous American bakery chain. They take 20 minutes of preparation and about 15 minutes in the oven, and make 6 big cookies.

Baking them at a low temperature keeps them pale and tender, and powdered sugar plus cornstarch in the dough gives them the dense, melt in your mouth texture that made them a social media hit.

How to Make Crumbl Cookies at Home?

Crumbl style cookies are made by creaming soft butter with powdered sugar, adding egg, vanilla, flour, cornstarch, and baking soda, shaping thick 80 g discs, baking them at 140°C (284°F) until just set, and frosting them once cool with a pink buttercream.

Homemade Crumbl Cookies Recipe

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Servings: 6 large cookies

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 225 g (1¾ cups) of all purpose flour
  • 110 g (½ cup) of butter, softened
  • 110 g (1 cup) of powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • A pinch of fine salt

Frosting

  • 230 g (2 cups) of powdered sugar
  • 50 g (3½ tablespoons) of butter, softened
  • 25 ml (about 1½ tablespoons) of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon of almond extract
  • Pink food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 140°C (284°F) with the fan on and line two baking trays with parchment paper. In a large bowl, beat the butter and powdered sugar with an electric mixer at high speed for 5 minutes, until pale and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until well combined.

  1. Sift the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt over the butter mixture and beat at low speed until you get a smooth cookie dough. If it is too sticky, add a little more flour. Take 80 g portions, roll them into balls, and flatten them to a thickness of 1.5 to 2 cm. Place them on the trays with plenty of space between them, since they spread while baking.

  1. Bake the cookies on the middle rack for 12 to 14 minutes, rotating the tray halfway through. They should look pale but feel firm. Let them cool on the tray for 3 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  2. For the frosting, beat the butter until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and milk and beat at low speed until the sugar is fully incorporated. Add the almond extract and vanilla and beat until creamy.

  1. Add the pink food coloring little by little until you reach the shade you want. Spread about 1½ tablespoons of frosting over each cooled cookie in a circular swirl. Let the frosting set for about 30 minutes before serving.

Additional Tips

Take them out early

Remove the cookies when the edges are firm but the center still looks slightly pale and soft. They finish cooking and set as they cool on the rack.

Frost only cold cookies

Spread the frosting only on completely cool cookies. On warm cookies the butter melts and the color runs.

Use soft butter

The butter should be at room temperature, about 10 minutes out of the fridge, so it can trap air while creaming.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the secret to the soft, chewy texture?

Powdered sugar and cornstarch in the dough make the cookies more tender and less crisp, and the low oven temperature keeps them pale and soft.

2. What does the almond extract do in the frosting?

It is a signature flavor of Crumbl’s pink sugar cookie. It adds a subtle nutty note that lifts the vanilla and balances the sweetness of the powdered sugar.

3. Can I use cold butter?

No. The butter must be at room temperature. Creaming it with the sugar for 5 minutes incorporates air, which is essential for the pale, fluffy dough. About 10 minutes out of the fridge should be enough.

4. How should I store Crumbl style cookies?

Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge, since the frosting contains butter and milk, and let them come to room temperature before eating.
